The Bike Store story started back in 2005. Although Ivan and his family were engaged in other sectors—and still run different enterprises to this day—their shared love for biking inspired them to take over a small shop in the town center. They soon opened a second venue at its current location, which within two years turned into their main shop and continues to be a go-to landmark for the local cycling scene. .
"I’ve always had a huge passion for cycling, ever since my uncle gave me a 24-inch Bianchi when I was a kid for helping him out at his hotel for a while. That’s where this great love was born, and so, even without any particular sales experience in the industry, I jumped headfirst into this adventure in the bike world,' says Ivan.
Ivan certainly went on to develop those business skills in spades, passing them down to his sons who now work alongside him at a premier outlet like The Bike Store. That entrepreneurial spirit goes hand in hand with a slight streak of recklessness and a willingness to take risks that drives ambitious projects and challenges. It’s the same mindset that has always fueled Ivan’s professional journey and personal pursuits—like when he tackled the grueling Ötztaler Radmarathon in Sölden late this August. Facing 220 km and 5,100 meters of elevation gain with bare-minimum training miles under his belt, he still crossed the finish line with the trademark Longa grit."
Tommaso set for competition
Ivan reflects on the evolution of the bike market. "Road cycling is truly taking off in Livigno, much like across the rest of Italy. A decade ago, we might sell one road tire a day during peak season; today, we easily sell ten. Traditional mountain biking feels fairly stable right now. Has the off-road movement perhaps peaked for the time being? That said, the evolution of MTB technology over recent years has been incredible... time will tell. Years ago it was La Pedaleda, today it’s the Granfondo—is this a barometer for the market? Perhaps. Of course, Livigno is in a league of its own, given that its cycling ecosystem is complete and multifaceted. Gravity biking, meanwhile, remains a cornerstone for Livigno and deserves an interview all its own."
However, Ivan’s real bet for the future is gravel: "There is enormous market demand; many riders own a gravel bike as a secondary ride alongside their road bike. This seems to be the clear trend, at least for the immediate future, with 'alpine gravel' being the ideal niche to fully experience Livigno’s bike area, working side-by-side with road cycling, which remains The Bike Store's core market."
As the season rolls on and the roads and trails fill with riders, Ivan Longa commends the collective efforts across Livigno during the summer months: "The Board of Tourism is working with all the stakeholders and the biking community to coordinate a range of initiatives to best promote cycling, which stands at the heart of our summer offerings. Proving that Livigno is far more than just a ski capital."
